Bistrita Monastery
Bistrita Monastery
Build in 1490 by Craioveanu Boyars, Bistrita Monastery, one of the bigges centres of culture of the medieval period, has been housing the sacred bones of Saint Gregory the Decapolite (780-842) since 1497. Here, monk Macary created the first tipography from Vallachia. The actual construction of the monastery dates back from the rulers Gheorghe Bibescu and Barbu Stirbei, from the mid 19th Century. The painture of the new church, in oil, was made by painter Gheorghe Tattarescu in 1850. Out of the interesting of history we mention the fact that in one of the buildings of the monastery general Ion Antonescu was exiled, before he took over the power of the state.
